1. Appreciate the history behind the establishment of a colonial registry for births, deaths and marriages in NL.

2. The role that the establishment of the Cottage Hospital system had in the change from home to hospital-based birth.

3. Understand some of the historic traditions associated with indigenous childbirth and the necessity to try to preserve such traditions in modern childbirth care.
