Planned Giving:
To learn about the
Planned Giving benefits to you, download our full-colour PDF
brochure “Planned Giving” or carry on reading below.
The information on
these pages is intended to provide accurate information
regarding planned giving at The Trinity Historical Society,
but is not intended as legal, accounting, tax, investment,
or other professional advice. If such advice is required,
the services of a competent professional should be sought.
What is Planned Giving?
Planned Giving is a way for you to provide donations to a
charity in a manner that is tax preferred to you and/or your
estate. Planned giving includes bequests through your will,
gifts of life insurance and retirement plan designations.
How You Can Make A Difference Today
A planned gift to Trinity Historical Society helps to ensure
the continuation of programs and services that directly
benefit future generations.
As a donor, a planned gift allows you to perpetuate your
belief that the work done by THS is valuable and important
and is a commitment to the community to be shared. At the
same time, you will realize tax savings either now or in the
future, depending on the option you choose.
Bequests
Bequests are gifts made through your will for a specific
amount or a percentage of what is left after you have
provided for your loved ones. You could also give a specific
piece of property, stocks and bonds, or other non-cash
assets.
A bequest also has tax benefits for your estate. Planned
today, a bequest is not paid to Trinity Historical Society
until after you pass away. By carefully planning your
bequest, you may eliminate all the taxes payable on death.
Your executor can claim bequests up to 100% of the net
income on your final two tax returns.
Outright Gifts
Most outright gifts are made in cash, but as with bequests,
anything of value may be given. For non-cash assets,
however, we ask that you first check with the THS office to
ensure that the planned gift meets our acceptance criteria.
Life Insurance
Life insurance policies are an excellent way to make a
substantial gift by naming the THS as a beneficiary. You may
choose to do this through an existing policy or open a new
policy for this sole purpose.
If you are still making payments on an existing policy or if
you purchase a new policy for this purpose you can arrange
to receive a charitable tax receipt for the premiums you
pay. A planned gift of life insurance can either save you
tax dollars today, meaning immediate tax relief, or your
estate can receive a tax credit for the face value of your
policy. Payments of small premiums today can provide a
significant contribution towards the future of Society
programs.
Retirement Plan Designations
A second type of expectancy gaining in popularity among
donors involves naming an organization as the beneficiary of
a retirement plan. For many individuals, retirement plan
assets represent the single largest asset in their
portfolios. Like the bequest, it is easy to understand and
easy to implement. This gifting opportunity merely involves
obtaining a beneficiary designation form from the retirement
plan administrator and naming a charity as the entire, or
partial, beneficiary of the retirement plan assets upon the
owner’s death.
A donor may achieve
significant income and estate tax savings by naming a
charity as the beneficiary of the retirement plan assets
rather than a non-charity.
Designating Your Gift
All gifts to Trinity Historical Society are extremely
valuable and will have a direct and long–term impact on the
Society. An unrestricted gift, however, carries with it an
added advantage: the flexibility to allow Trinity Historical
Society the opportunity to better meet the needs and
challenges of an unpredictable future.
Donors may prefer to direct their contribution to benefit
one of Trinity Historical Society's current programs:
Your options for giving:
• Wherever the need is greatest
• Fort Point Project
• Programming
• Our web–based initiatives
• Maintenance and/or expansion of THS properties.
Recognition
Thank you for honouring Trinity Historical Society by
considering a planned gift. If you do plan to make a future
gift to the Society through your Will, we would appreciate
notification of the same. It is our goal to ensure that all
future gifts to the Society are handled according to the
wishes of the donor. This goal requires us to maintain
accurate permanent records of our correspondence with future
donors.
As a registered charity, the Trinity Historical Society can
accept donations and issue receipts for income tax purposes.
In return for your gift, we will include you in our annual
list of supporters that appears in our Annual Report.
To ensure that your Will, or any codicil to it, is valid and
takes full advantage of current legislation, please consult
your lawyer or financial advisor, if you currently have one.
If you do not have an advisor and need assistance, ask the
THS office for a “Leave a Legacy NL ” brochure which will
provide helpful suggestions and a list of local
organizations that can refer you to an appropriate
professional. You can talk to him or her about planning a
gift. They can tell you about the tax benefits of a gift and
can offer some creative ideas about planning gifts that will
meet all your personal and charitable objectives.
Should you wish to
discuss your gift to THS in confidence, please
contact us.
